The Florida Theatre Renovation
The wait was over. The paint had dried, the plaster was restored, and last year, the historic Florida Theatre in downtown Jacksonville reopened its doors on Saturday, October 28, 2023, with a thrilling performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preceding this grand reopening, Mayor Donna Deegan and other dignitaries participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, October 27, 2023, inside the beautifully restored lobby/auditorium.
As the Marketing Director during this transformative project, I had the privilege to oversee the comprehensive renovation of this 96-year-old cultural icon. From mid-July 2023, the theatre underwent extensive enhancements. We meticulously repaired the flaking plaster, faithfully restored the 1927 color palette in the auditorium and lobbies, replaced the entire HVAC system, and relocated the electrical vault from the first to the third floor. Notably, all public restrooms were updated entirely, enhancing comfort and functionality.
These efforts built upon previous milestones achieved under my leadership, including the replacement of 1,865 seats, expansion of wheelchair accessibility, installation of a new assistive listening system, and modernization of aisle lighting and handrails, particularly in the balcony. The addition of a new concert sound and lighting system and the transformation of the second floor into the Remedy Lounge marked significant improvements to the visitor experience and venue functionality.
Throughout this journey, the support from the City of Jacksonville, matching private donations, and the dedication of our Centennial Campaign donors and Florida Theatre Members was invaluable. Special recognition goes to our principal artisans: Auld and White Constructors as the general contractor, Sauer Mechanical for HVAC work, EverGreene Architectural Arts for plaster and paint restoration, and Beacon Electrical Contractors for relocating the electrical vault.
Reflecting on this monumental effort, Numa Saisselin, President of the Florida Theatre, highlighted the $15 million invested in building improvements, emphasizing our commitment to preserving this historic landmark for future generations. Looking ahead, plans included additional enhancements such as expanding the entry lobby, creating new artist hospitality spaces, improving dressing rooms, restoring the marquee, and upgrading administrative offices.
"This $15 million renovation has elevated the unique Florida Theatre experience to new heights," remarked Dr. Leslie Gordon, Ed.D., Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Florida Theatre. "As we approached our centennial in 2027, preserving and nurturing this historic gem was vital, ensuring it continues to inspire and entertain for another century."
